A clear bottle is not necessary. The container must be 3oz or under and in the sandwich sized ziploc bag (not a gallon size).





They also do not permit a half used 6oz bottle. Even though it's 3oz of product, the container must be under 3oz. When traveling, I see this most often attempted with toothpaste. They will not allow a half used 6oz tube of toothpaste.
