Because the refractive index of transparent materials is still slightly higher than 0.If a glass or a shampoo bottle is clear, why can we still see it?

The glass being transparent means that light will pass through it. However because glass has a different refractive index to air, any light rays passing through the glass will be bent unless they pass through at 90degrees in which case they will just slow down a little. The effect of this is that if you look through a flat piece of glass, you cannot tell that it is there. If you look through glass which is curved, then you distort the light rays. A bottle causes such a distortion. If you fill your bottle with water, then depending on the shape of the bottle you will be able to make a primitive lens and find that any writing on one side of the bottle looks bigger when viewed from the opposite side.
It cannot be as clear as air though.

There is a difference between clear (or transparent) and invisible. Clear, we see through, invisible we don't see.

In this case, plastic seems transparent when 1mm thick. However, if it is 5cm thick, you might see it is opaque or semi-transparent, because it blocks more light %26amp; is not perfectly transparent.





Common bottle is round, so as you see the glass nearer to the side horizon, there will be less light. So, a vertical shadow will be visible.
