How is the best way to clean a whole bottle worth of pet shampoo out of carpet?

I have a 3yr old who wanted to give the kitty a bath in her 2yr old brothers room %26amp; dumped a 12oz bottle of cat shampoo over the cat. Needless to say the cat is clean enough to eat off of(eeew!) but the carpet shampoo machine I have cautions against useing it to clean foaming products. So again I ask!

You can use your carpet shampoo machine still. The problem is to keep the foam from overflowing in the recepticle tank and being sucked in the motor.

You can do this one of two ways:

1. Rug Doctor makes a commercial ';defoaming'; product you can put in the tank that will keep the shampoo from foaming up as much.

2. Regular fabric softner is a great defoaming agent. Put some fabric softner (I put enough for a small laundry load in ine) in the recepticle tank.

I would pour some water onto the soap spot to cut the shampoo a little. Immediately afterward, run over the spot with your steam vac/carpet shampooer. The pet shampoo will still foam quite a bit, but no where near as much. when the foam gets near the top, empty the tank out and go over the spot again.

You could probably accomplish the same thing with a Wet/Dry vac. If you have a shop vac lying around, just cut the shampoo with about a pint of water and vacuum the area with the wet/dry vac. Again, you could add fabric softner or a defoaming agent to keep the suds down in the tank.

Good Luck! How is the best way to clean a whole bottle worth of pet shampoo out of carpet?
Wow, that's a lot of soap..... i would use vinegar to cut the soap and just keep extracting from the carpet..... it will have to be done over and over and over.... what a mess!

Good luck!
You don't want to use your carpet shampooer because all you'll get is foam. You want to use something that will extract the shampoo from the carpet, rather than something with brushes that will simply stir up foam. A steam cleaner or wet/dry vacuum would be your best course of action.

If you have a steam cleaner, just use plain water in it and go over the areas with the pet shampoo.

If you are using a wet/dry vac, you'll need to dilute the pet shampoo by pouring water onto it then vacuuming it up. You'll have to repeat this several times to dilute the shampoo sufficiently to be able to extract all of it from the carpet.

Good luck, and I'm glad the kitty seems to be OK.
bi carb soda to absorb it all with paper towels however if it is already dried you will need to re wet it so that it foams then put the bi carb soda over it and use lots of paper towels until the froth stops. dry it with a hair dryer(not too close to the carpet, otherwise you will burn it, don't laugh a friend of mine scorched hers by getting too close)
you should not allow infants access to chemicals, even shampoo, hope your cats ok, BUT enough of my lecture, the BEST way to get all that soap out is with a wet/dry vacuum and about 30 minutes of your time, pour water (about 2 1/2 cups) on spot work in ever so slightly, vacuum, repeat process until you have all the soap up . hope this helps.
